The Site

Overview

Khor Al Adaid — the Inland Sea — is one of the world's most unusual natural phenomena: a tidal sea that pushes deep inland through a narrow channel, surrounded entirely by towering sand dunes. Recognised by UNESCO as a protected natural reserve, its shallow, turquoise waters hide a treasure of marine biodiversity beneath a surface that looks almost too beautiful to be real. Diving here is an immersive experience unlike anywhere else in the Gulf, combining desert landscapes above with seagrass meadows, sandy flats, and abundant marine life below.

Site Highlights

  • UNESCO-recognised protected natural reserve
  • Surrounded by dramatic desert dunes — a surreal above/below contrast
  • Dugong sightings reported in the seagrass beds
  • Seahorse habitat in shallow seagrass meadows
  • Ideal for snorkelling, discovery dives, and freediving

Underwater World

Marine Life

Here is who you are likely to meet beneath the surface.

Dugong

Qatar's Inland Sea is one of the last habitats where dugong are occasionally spotted grazing the seagrass — a bucket-list encounter.

Green Sea Turtles

Turtles visit the seagrass beds to feed and are regularly sighted resting on sandy patches in the shallows.

Seahorses

The dense seagrass meadows provide perfect camouflage for seahorses — patient divers with sharp eyes are rewarded.

Cuttlefish

Masters of camouflage, cuttlefish glide through the seagrass, putting on spectacular colour-changing displays.

Pufferfish

Porcupine and starry pufferfish are common throughout, often hovering curiously close to divers.

Flatfish & Rays

Butterfly rays and various flatfish species bury themselves in the sandy bottom, blending perfectly with the substrate.

What To Expect

The Experience

The journey to Khor Al Adaid is an adventure in itself — a 4×4 drive through Qatar's southern desert dunes before reaching the channel. Diving is from shore or inflatable, into gin-clear shallows at first light when visibility peaks. The calm, enclosed environment makes this the ideal site for first-time ocean divers, freediving sessions, and underwater nature photography. Sunrise and sunset dives offer spectacular light conditions through the shallow water column.

Certification

None required for snorkelling — Open Water or higher for scuba
