The Site

Overview

Ras Roukan Island sits at the northernmost tip of Qatar, a remote limestone outcrop rising from the Arabian Gulf surrounded by deep, clear water. This is where serious divers come. The island reef drops away steeply on its northern face, offering wall and slope diving down to 25 metres with strong currents that drive pelagic life right to the reef edge. Large sharks, manta rays, barracuda, and massive schools of trevally are a regular occurrence. The remoteness of the location means the reef is pristine, the fish are bold, and every dive feels like genuine exploration.

Site Highlights

  • Qatar's deepest recreational dive site at 25 m
  • Dramatic wall and slope topography
  • Large pelagic species including sharks and manta rays
  • Virtually untouched reef in pristine condition
  • Ideal for drift diving along the northern face

Underwater World

Marine Life

Here is who you are likely to meet beneath the surface.

Nurse & Leopard Sharks

Both species are regularly encountered resting on ledges or cruising the wall — large, calm, and completely approachable.

Manta Rays

Seasonally (November–February), manta rays ride the current along the northern wall in one of Qatar's most spectacular wildlife events.

Giant Barracuda

Solitary great barracuda hang in the current at depth, alongside roaming schools of smaller fish.

Trevally & Jack Schools

Massive baitball formations of bigeye trevally and rainbow runners attract predators and create cinematic diving moments.

Hard Coral Gardens

The shallower sections of the reef are carpeted in healthy brain and table corals, supporting dense reef fish communities.

Hawksbill Turtles

Hawksbill turtles are frequent visitors, often seen resting on the reef crest between feeding runs.

What To Expect

The Experience

Ras Roukan is a full-day boat expedition departing early morning — approximately 90 minutes by speedboat from Doha. Two dives are planned: the dramatic northern wall for drift diving, followed by the shallower reef garden for a relaxed second dive. This site requires good buoyancy control and comfort in current. Divers are treated to a surface interval on the island itself — a raw, beautiful slice of undeveloped Qatar. Limited to small groups to preserve the pristine environment.
