The Site

Overview

Old Club Reef is the heartbeat of diving in Qatar. This purpose-built artificial reef sits off the shores of Mesaieed and has been transforming into a thriving underwater ecosystem for decades. Sunken structures now serve as the foundation for an extraordinary marine habitat — encrusted in corals, wrapped in sea fans, and pulsing with life. It's the site where most Deep Blue divers take their first open-water plunge, and for good reason: calm conditions, rich biodiversity, and a layout that rewards every level of diver.

Site Highlights

  • Historical structures covered in hard and soft corals
  • One of Qatar's most dived and best-known sites
  • Excellent for macro photography and wide-angle shots
  • Accessible year-round with predictable conditions
  • Perfect training ground for new certifications

Underwater World

Marine Life

Here is who you are likely to meet beneath the surface.

Arabian Angelfish

Striking blue-and-yellow adults patrol the reef structures in pairs, among the most photographed species here.

Groupers & Snappers

Large schools of yellowfin goatfish and snapper cruise the mid-water column above the reef.

Moray Eels

Giant and undulated moray eels peer from crevices in the old structures, often accompanied by cleaner shrimp.

Octopus

Common octopus are regularly spotted foraging across the rubble and coral base, especially at dusk.

Stingrays

Blue-spotted lagoon rays rest in the sandy patches between reef structures — a guaranteed highlight.

Parrotfish

Vibrant parrotfish graze on algae-coated surfaces, their crunching audible underwater.

What To Expect

The Experience

Dive briefings depart from Mesaieed, with boat transit under 20 minutes. Multiple dive profiles are possible within the same site — shallow wide loops for beginners, deeper structural exploration for advanced divers. Night dives here reveal a completely different reef community, with sleeping parrotfish, hunting lionfish, and bioluminescent plankton.
